Last year we received an email about a little boy who’s only wish for Christmas was a gift for his best friend; what a selfless request from such a young boy. You see, this boy did not make the request because he had everything he needs (what young boy does). The Christmas wish was requested from a young boy in a very sad situation who in fact didn’t know where his next meal was coming from. But when given the chance to ask for anything, the little boy looked to Santa and said, “I really want a bone for my best friend…my dog.”

Our hearts broke at the thought of not having the means to provide for our families and pets. The simple request of a bone for his dog symbolizes more than just a dog without a bone, it shines a light on the families whose fur kids really are a part of their families but are often over looked due to financial stress on the family. This story touched our hearts and we wanted to find a way to give a bone to more dogs/families in need this holiday season. We all put our heads together to come up with a campaign to help a family (or five) in need this holiday season, and so was born the “Wishbone Holiday Campaign.”

In December 2011, through the kindness of the community, LHS raised $10,000 for five deserving families. We were featured on News Channel 8 and the donations flooded in for the families in need. The program was such a huge success we have decided to make it an annual Campaign!

We are currently accepting submissions for our 2nd Annual Wishbone Holiday Campaign. Please submit stories about families you know that have fallen on hard times and their pets needs have taken a back seat due to financial stress. This can include not having money for food, needing their pets current on vaccinations/HW prevention, spay/neutering, meds/food for special needs pets or even pets that need surgeries but the family does not have the money to have the surgery done (i.e. hip dysplasia, bladder stones, kidney stones, dental work, etc). This can also cover families with debt to their vets for services provided to help save their pets.

All submission must be sent in by Nov 22nd, the honored families will be announced Nov 30th! Starting December 1st, each family will have a page dedicated to them on the LHS website with their story and pictures along with a ChipIn to help track the donations brought in for each families pets. The donations will run up until December 22nd with the lucky families receiving Gift Cards to pet Stores (for food, meds, supplies) or credit at a local vet to have their pets cared for in whatever way needed on Dec 24th 2012.

How to Apply:

Submit a one page (max) 12pt font story about a family whose pets are in need of assistance and why you feel they are deserving of this special gift this Holiday season. Email to Pres@LegacyHumaneSociety.org or mail to (P.O. Box 2733 McKinney, TX 75070). Pictures of the family and their pets will help but is not required. Be sure to specify; family story, what the pets needs are, how many pets they have, and any details about the pets (age, breed, type of pet, etc).

Requirements:

The family must live in the DFW area and the family’s story must be able to be verified by the LHS board. The Family cannot be abusing or neglecting the pets (they must be in a good home where they are safe and well cared for aside from needing routine vet care, surgeries, debt at a vet for care/vetting provided to their animals, meds or food).

How to Sponsor a Family:

Once the families are posted on the website and Facebook on December 1st, 2012 you can make donations directly on the website via the ChipIn link or you can send donations to PO Box 2733, McKinney, TX 75070 (make checks payable to LHS and note in the subject line which family the donation is for). You can also make donations to the families in the name of someone else (i.e You would like to make a donation in the name of Suzy Smith for the Jones Family) and LHS will send you or the “Smith” family a card that details their donation; which is the perfect gift for the person that has it all this holiday season.
